3 Ways to Prepare For An In-Home Newborn Photo Session

I’m going to take you through my 3 top ways parents can prepare for their in-home newborn session.

In-home newborn photography is still a growing service and many parents don't know how to prepare for this kind of session. Some of the common thoughts might be:

  • Is my house good enough?

  • Will I need to clean and tidy?

  • What will I wear?

  • My house is dark, will it still work?

  • How can I prepare my baby?

Let's dive into these thoughts!

Your Home

Firstly, I want to start by saying that you do not need to spend 2 days cleaning your home in preparation for your photo session.

Focus on clearing spaces near windows in the living room, bedroom, and nursery. Keep your sofas and bed clear. Photographers never judge your home and we really don't mind the mess. It's likely we are messy too!

If you are worried about lighting in your home, you can send your photographer some quick photos of the space you have. Remember we do this all the time and can make use of all the natural light available. We also bring extra lighting as a backup.

Clothing

This question comes up a lot - what do I wear? Some parents may feel strange choosing nice clothes to stay at home but I promise it’s worth it.

My advice would be to choose clothes that suit your personality and style. Choose light colours that work well such as blue, white, and pastel colours.  You can however wear what you like. One of my clients wore matching Rolling Stones t-shirts.

My biggest advice would be to stay away from big logos and prints.

Preparing Your Baby

This is such an important part of your session, as it determines how happy and content your baby will be during the photos.

I always recommend my clients to do a big feed before I arrive or we can start the session with a feed if you want that documented. We want your baby to be milk drunk and content, to begin with.

I personally allow up to 2 hours for your session to factor in feeding, changing, and settling your baby.

Please don't worry if your baby cries. We honestly don't judge and it's completely normal for babies to be unsettled at times.
